Reeboks

My brother and I used to share shoes and clothes. We were almost of the same size back then, and it was a healthy symbiotic relationship. Then he got married, and took with him a couple of shoes. So When he invited us to play badminton a month ago, I realized I do not have a pair of tennis shoes anymore. So naturally, I have to buy one.

It was of perfect timing that Royal Sporting House was having a big sale that time in Festival Supermall. I got this nice pair of Reeboks for a thousand bucks. Sweet!

Can't finish The Alchemist

I've only started regularly reading books last year, starting with Dan Brown's "Angels & Demons". It was such a positive experience that I vowed myself to pick up the habit of reading books.

Yes, I finished several books before that as well. But I hated it. I was just being forced to read because my Literature grades would surely be inked in red if I don't. But that was before.

As I was searching for books to read, I decided I have to read some sort of modern day classic. Several names came to mind: John Grisham, Paulo Coelho, Tom Clancy, Anne Rice. I settled on Paulo Coelho. My friend Grace, board topnotcher and classmate for more than a decade, is a fan. Of course, "The Alchemist" was the obvious choice among his best-sellers.

But it was harder than I thought finding this book. I searched several bookstores inside the malls but to no avail, until I found this small stall outside Trinoma selling used and new books at a bargain.

I browsed through several books, with my mind set on not buying anything, until I found this little thin yellowish book covered in plastic.

Paulo Coelho. "The Alchemist". Jackpot. I bought it in a heartbeat.

The Alchemist

That was weeks ago. And I haven't finished the little book yet. "Angels & Demons" and "Da Vinci Code" were much thicker books which I finished in a week.

No, I'm not saying that "The Alchemist" is bad. It's actually a good book. A simple and inspiring read. Nothing too fancy - just a well-thought-of genius of a book.

But it's not a compelling read for me. Maybe it's just not my alley. I'll try picking it up before sleeping and hopefully, finish it tonight.

Cafe Bola revisited

Cafe Bola

My college friends and I were having dinner after a month of not having seen each other. Nothing new, just the usual - Friday night, Makati area. But it was not an ordinary Friday night - it was Payday Friday. And God knows how long the waiting queues are on Payday Fridays.

Glorietta restaurants were packed. With nowhere to go, I suggested National Sports Grill, even as we were trying to pinch pennies. Not all of us, after all, have graduated. But the big servings coupled with live sports (and need I say hotter than usual waitresses) would make the higher price-point worth our moolah.

But alas, it's the Wimbledon men's final. Understandably, nobody is giving up his seat.

By that time, it was already past nine in the evening. And we were starving. We came up with the consensus that any restaurant that can offer us seats would be the winner. We went to Cafe Bola upon my suggestion.

And again, Cafe Bola delivers.
Cafe Bola

It would be a sin to dine in Cafe Bola without ordering their famous Adobo Flakes and Kesong Puti rice bowl (P180). It's a generous serving of rice topped with crispy adobo flakes, kesong puti, tomato slice, and spring onion. The slightly sour kesong puti is a good foil to the salty krispy adobo flakes. I can finish this in minutes!

Cafe Bola

Cafe Bola is also know for their, what else, bolas or meatballs. The Carambola on pasta (P210) packs three meatballs (beef, chicken, and seafood) on top of spaghetti with a choice of classic tomata and peas or parmesan cream and ham sauces. It's the best way to sample the meatballs in one dish. This is incredibly filling and the mish-mash of the different flavors of the meatballs is a wonderful experience.

Of course, the ambiance adds to the experience. The red and orange interiors and circular patterns are extremely modern, while the local movie posters add that Filipino touch without the use of salakots and barongs.

Cafe Bola Cafe Bola Cafe Bola

I'd have to say it's one of my favorite restaurants.

The Bellevue Manila

The Bellevue

My niece recently went home from California to celebrate her debut here. As they are frequent guests of The Bellevue Manila, it's a no-brainer that they've decided to stage the occasion there.

It was my first time to step inside the hotel and I have to say - I'm pretty impressed! It's nice to know that such a good-looking hotel is within minutes from home.

The Bellevue

The food boasted of fresh salad, bread, main courses, and desserts. The main courses have refined flavors. Nothing memorable, but still pretty good.

It pays to have generous friends

Bally

A friend of mine gave me his uncle's used Ballys. They were causing his uncle some foot problems, and no one else is of the same size.

And what do you know, I just happen to be sporting a size 7! It's about time my poor feet get a taste of luxury. Hehe.

Thank you, generous soul. I love them.

Of shopping and Taco Bell

Dean & Trent

While waiting for a business contact to arrive, I found the time to do some quick shopping. Bought this heather grey jacket from Dean & Trent, a local brand that offers stylish men's apparel for a reasonable price. Love the color and the oversized collar cum shawl.

After that, I filled my empty tummy with Taco Bell. Nothing like Mexican fast food for brunch.

Taco Bell brunch

The question is, why the few branches? I was especially disappointed that the Taco Bell in SM Southmall closed down. Until now, that spot remains empty. Paging the Aranetas: will you open there again so I could get my quick fix?

I'm a bread lover. I prefer having bread than eating rice, even if it has more calories.

One of my favorite bread is the milk bread loaf of Le Coeur de France. It is simple, nothing fancy, but just really soft and delicious bread.

Roti Mum

Roti Mum

I've been meaning to try Roti Mum for the longest time but the idea of eating a big bun was not exactly my idea of an indulgent snack.

But how wrong am I. It was absolutely delicious. Rich coffee flavor, which I really like since I'm a coffee drinker. It's sweet and extremely soft. Probably one of the softest bread I've eaten aside from Le Ceour de France's milk loaf.

At Php 50, it's quite an expensive bread but it's so worth it. Each bun is really big. Big enough to sate a person's appetite. I'll definitely be buying this again.

Red Mango

Red Mango

Last week, I tried Red Mango in Eastwood Mall when I had an exam at IBM Business Services. The first thing I noticed was how expensive it was! I forgot the exact prices but I think my order, which was a large frozen yoghurt with blueberry and mango, was about Php 150.

But the serving was really big. Bigger than The White Hat. Still too expensive for a mid-afternoon snack. But that's what you pay for something healthy.

Anyway, it's consistency was really creamy. Not too tangy, which was disappointing. I like my fro-yo tangy so that I know it is yoghurt and not ice cream. It did feel like I was eating ice cream with fresh fruits.

Red Mango
Despite these negative points, I still like it. What can I say - I'm a sucker for desserts. I don't know if I'll ever return though. There's The White Hat which I like better, is less expensive, and more convenient.

Supr Flickr 0.4

EDIT: I will stop releasing Supr Flickr due to copyright issues.

Supr Flickr 0.4 is released. This version fixes issues with the add-on showing JavaScript errors as well as working with sites other than Flickr.

Supr Flickr is a compilation of Greasemonkey scripts for Flickr. This add-on adds the following functionalities to Flickr:

* Adds a simple rich edit interface (Bold, Italic, Blockquote, Link) input textarea in Flickr where you can use HTML.

* Adds links to different sizes directly to a Flickr photo page, generates html code to easily copy'n paste thumbnail & description, and automatically loads your 20 most used tags when you click "Add Tag."

* It adds an icon_reply link at each of the comments under your photo (highlighted above on the left hand side). When you click on the link, the buddy icon html code will be added into the Add your comment box, where you can show nicely who your replies are directed at (see the result highlighted above on the right hand side).

* Removes any award comments from Flickr photos.

* Allows you to send your Flickr image to multiple groups.

* Display a Google Map in the Additional Information section of a Flickr photo page, if location info is available.

* Adds useful links to external services to the user sub-menu. Based on Browse by Interesting script by steeev and Scout Link by netomer.

Delayed

The Peak
The Peak, as taken by my parents last August, 2008.

My sister and I were supposed to go to Hong Kong the weekend of May 1, Labor Day. But then due to our being both busy, we weren't able to book our tickets until prices have jacked up considerably.

So we settled to go to Hong Kong on the weekend of Bonifacio Day in late November. It's okay. The later the travel date, the more I can save. I probably should have a job by then.

But I really want to go somewhere just with my friends, without a definite itinerary, while staying in a budget hotel. I want to be a backpacker. I've always told this to my friends, but none share the same ideas. Hhmmm. Maybe I should persuade them more.

But for now, I'm more than happy to stay comfortably in a nice hotel. My sister's paying for everything.

I've been reviewing for my board exam and fortunately, was able to pass it. The celebrations are done and over.

What now?

I am currently being considered to be part of Sun Cellular's engineering management trainees. During the interview, the panelists asked me one question I couldn't forget: "Are you a leader?"

All my life I feel like I've always been a follower. And a good one at that I believe. Yes, I became group leader here and there, but was I a leader of a large group? No.

And I couldn't help asking myself: "Am I mature enough to be a manager?" As I was riding on the bus home, I further examined myself. I regretted not joining as many clubs and organizations as I can during high school and college. But then again, maybe I would've failed more subjects had I joined.

But then I came to realize one thing: I feel that I want to be a leader. I feel that I am ready. It's true that I'm scared of the unknown. Scared of failing. But the desire is there.

I'll just hope that the whole me is willing.

Supr Flickr!

Wow.

I'm currently really really busy but I have to blog about this. Anyway, the Firefox extension I created just yesterday, Supr Flickr, got a review!

Thanks Josh Lowensohn and to the makers of Better Flickr, where my extension is based. Also thanks to Anthony Lieuallen for his Script Compiler.

I made this extension because I noticed that Better Flickr has not been updated for a long time now, and several of it's functionalities are broken, like photo magnifier. I also wanted to add several features. So there. I hope it gets out of the Sandbox and hope it helps a lot of users.

Boyet Fajardo: Another egotistical pig

I don't know who Boyet Fajardo is. And I don't know people who buy his fashions. But anyway if you do, then please boycott his products. Here's why.

According to this blog, which is supposedly run by Duty Free employees, Boyet Fajardo humiliated several Duty Free employees for asking him for another ID because the credit card he presented was unsigned.

So he took the "Don't-you-know-who-I-am" route.

Ugh. I really really hate egotistical and conceited pigs. We should answer them by telling the truth: no, we don't know who the fuck they are.

Here's a video of the incident.

Earth Hour

Earth Hour will be celebrated on March 28 at 8:30 PM. Please do your part and turn off your lights. This simple act will help us in coping with climate change.

Unfortunately for me, this falls on the night before the second day of my board examinations. I have to study, so I guess I shall use candles or lamps inside my room.

Please. Do your share. Love Mother Earth.

Manila Ocean Park

We went to Manila Ocean Park last Saturday. It was amazing but totally packed. Would love to return when everything gets finished, with my (future) DSLR camera, and on a weekday. Yeah.

The place was great. Lots of fun. Amazing fishes and beautiful colors. Let the photos do the talking.

There's a view of Manila Bay and several docked ships. This would be great if Manila Bay was clean.

The sunset would be amazing I guess. Starbucks and Ozeano have great views of Manila Bay. Several restaurants are opening as well. There's this Asian restaurant which intrigues me.

There's a North Park, Chowking and San Mig Cafe among others as well.

Saw a Mrs. Field's and grabbed a soft cinnamon roll cos I was starving after that long walk. Yum!

Mrs. Field's

I can't wait for the H2O Hotel to open. I'm guessing it will be like Dubai's Burj Al-Arab with a view of the ocean and marine animals. But less posh of course. Now if only they really could get Manila Bay cleaned.

We then had lunch at the nearby Emerald Restaurant. Huge servings at a great price. Love their fish in tausi sauce and minced duck.

Crocs Mega Sale and Amici gelato

I went to the Crocs Mega Sale on Friday. I wanted to buy a Men's Santa Cruz and probably the Men's Athens or Hydro. Got there at around 2:30 PM but to my dismay, the queue was just too long! It was ridiculous!

I didn't want to stand in line in the middle of the sun. Apparently, they were only letting around 50 people in at a time. It took shoppers a total of 2 or more hours just to get their beloved Crocs.

So I just walked away and grabbed a dirty ice cream before going to SM Megamall. I kinda regret not staying in line though, as the prices were down to around Php 500 to Php 1000! I guess I have to buy the Santa Cruz at a regular price, or try checking out the outlet in Paseo de Roxas.

To console myself, I had a hazelnut gelato at Amici.

Amici
I still can't believe it only costs Php 40! I'd say best value for money gelato in the metro ever.

I just wish they open one in the South, preferably Alabang Town Center. Even better if they do in SM Southmall!
